End of Term Highlights from TLAP
BackNursery and Reception
This week we had two special visitors in Nursery. We have been learning about babies and what they need to stay healthy and happy. We had a visit from baby Boden and baby Arlo. We got to see them being fed and talked about what we can do now that babies cannot do. We have been missing our baby ducks so much, we have been writing letters to them and posting them in the post box. We have been learning about patterns and pre-historic animals in Talk for Writing and working hard to learn our story map.
This week in Talk4Writing, Reception have been learning the story map for Handa’s Surprise. They have all written out the story in their own words and shared it with their classes. The children have also been learning about animals found in the Arctic. In Maths they have been learning the number bonds to 10 and working out the calculations using objects, part-whole model and the 10 frame. In Topic the children have been busy learning about the fruits from the story Handa’s Surprise and making collages of the fruits for our class displays.
Year One and Two
In RE this term, Year 2 have been exploring why Easter is so important to Christians. This week they visited St Mary’s Church where they explored the church’s secret library, including a 400 year old book on how to cure illnesses. Reverend Chris talked to the children about how different days during Holy Week are celebrated in the church and answered their questions on Easter and Christianity.
Year Three and Four
We started off this week in Year 3 with a fantastic trip back in time at Chiltern Open Air Museum. Children attended workshops which enriched their learning about the Stone and Iron Ages – and they had a blast too! In History, we discussed archaeology day and thought about the skills, tools and importance of an archaeologist’s job. In PSHE, we learned about hazards we may encounter and how to stay safe. In Science, we looked at X rays and how they are used to help radiologists and doctors heal internal injuries.
Year four have enjoyed Science week. They have attempted to make their own ice-cream, to observe states of matter changing. They also enjoyed a silly science show and explored the science dome. Also in Science, they have been investigating reversible and irreversible changes. In History, the children have been using primary and secondary resources to formulate their own opinions as to why Hadrian’s wall was built. In Computing, the children are beginning to add codes to their Roman games, including variables such as scoring and times.
Year Five and Six
It has been another busy week in Year 5. In RE, the children meet a person that practices Buddhism and were taught about how reflection and mediation play a vital role in fostering mindfulness, insight, emotional wellbeing, spiritual development, and a deeper connection to the teachings of Buddha. In Talk for Writing, the children began to translate Shakespearean language into modern day English. The children were amazed to see how much the English language has changed. The children also got to experience and learn about our planet and how it came to be in when visiting the Space Dome in The Langley Acxademy. They experienced different images and smells – not enjoying the smell of how the Earth used to smell (sulphur).
This week in Year 6 we have continued to expand our knowledge. In Science we have been investigating the properties of shadows and the factors that determine their size. They had great fun making the various different shadows puppets with their hands! In Writing, they have now started writing a newspaper article as if they were a journalist in 1947. This has been linked to our history learning about the outcomes of the partition and how it is still affecting people to this day. All Year 6 children have been given revision books for both English and Maths. We will be setting homework from these that they will need to complete as well as bringing both books in every day.
